Chapter Twelve

Jack’s POV

"Okay," I say, agreeing to her terms. She looks taken aback by my sudden agreement, so she repeats the words to be sure. "Okay?" she asks, raising her eyebrows in surprise.

"Yeah, okay," I repeat, making her realize that her words about me not caring about other people broke me. I felt like she really thought I was like that. "I will tell you everything you need to know about me," I add, determined to open up.

I get up to pour myself a drink, giving myself a moment to gather my thoughts. "Back when I was little, I admired my father whenever he worked and wanted to be just like him," I begin, taking a sip of my drink. "But as a child, I wanted to get the attention of a man who never showed love to his kid. I turned my wanting to impress him into something that could benefit him."

I pause to let the weight of my words sink in. "He says he was trying to shape me for the future, but I say he was trying to slowly destroy it."

I take another sip of my drink, relishing in its warmth as I continue to narrate my story. "I never met my mother, never saw a single picture of her growing up in that big, empty house," I confess. "I asked for her sometimes, but either he ignored me or yelled at me. I never knew what I did wrong to deserve such a childhood, but I do remember one thing: I never felt genuine happiness growing up."

I chuckle bitterly, the sound echoing in the quiet room. "One could easily say I had a rough childhood growing up, but everything I did when I was a kid was no one's fault except mine," I admit. "As my father pushed me to be greater than he was, making up perfect plans and planning my entire future without me even getting a say in what I want to actually do with my life, I, on the other hand, became a bully to people at my school ... ironic, isn't it? My dad was a bully to me, so I became a bully to them."

I take another sip of my drink, letting the warmth fill me up. "Years, months, weeks, and days passed, and I finally got to my senior year of high school. You know, the time when students start perfecting their portfolios so they could get a chance of entering a good college," I say.

"Yeah, well, it was during this time that my father started to make things difficult for me. He drags me to different meetings with him, making me take different SAT tests so I won’t fail the actual one. He ensures that I join various extracurricular activities in school, making it challenging to have friends or even go to parties and behave like the 17-year-old kid I want to be. It is senior year, and I meet your brother and … Ashley. This is the part that makes me wary of love, the part that shatters my heart every time I think about it.
